The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, snapped a twelve-day losing streak on Thursday, buoyed by higher rates in the capesize vessel segment.

The main index, which monitors rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, gained for the first time since March 25, adding 10 points or 0.8%, to 1,269.

The capesize index rose by 49 points or 2.8% to 1,781.

Average daily earnings for capesize vessels, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, increased by $401 to $14,768.

The panamax index shed 14 points, or 1.2%, to 1,189, lowest since March 12.

Average daily earnings for panamax vessels, which usually carry 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, was down $119 at $10,705.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index dropped to nearly a one-month low at 941.
